Transport system (federal highways/railroads, large industrial centers, portslogistics)
The most important trunk railroads are spread over the territory of Kaluga Region: Moscow – Kiev, Donbass – St. Petersburg, as well as Syzran – Vyazma and Michurinsk – Smolensk. These are both local and long-distance transit rail links connecting Moscow and St. Petersburg with Ukraine, Volga region, Central Black Earth region, and Belarus.
The territory of the region is crossed by two major highways of federal importance (Moscow -Brest, Moscow -Kiev) that provide transit links connecting Moscow with Ukraine, Moldova, Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary. Kaluga Region ranks among the country’s top 20 leading regions in terms of public railways and highways density and also ranks among the country’s top ten in terms of the most developed system of telecommunications.
Close proximity to the capital and such industrial centers as Tula and Bryansk also contribute to economic and geographic position of the region.
